Why do I need an ESA letter?
An ESA letter is essential for exercising your housing rights with your Emotional Support Dog. Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords and property managers must provide reasonable accommodations for tenants with a valid ESA letter. Many apartment buildings with no-pet policies also require an ESA letter.
If you are unsure whether you need an ESA letter, we encourage you to check with your landlord or property manager.

How do I get an ESA letter?
If you need an Emotional Support Animal Letter and do not regularly see a therapist that can prescribe you one, we can connect you with a mental health professional for a video call evaluation. If appropriate, the therapist will prescribe an ESA letter, which will be sent to you electronically via our secure HIPAA-compliant portal.

They will follow up with you to schedule a time that is convenient for you for your first evaluation which will take place through Zoom or FaceTime. Multiple sessions may be required for the therapist to fully understand your condition, but this is rare.
As this is a referral to an outside practitioner for teletherapy session(s), no guarantee is made that the practitioner will deem your condition worthy of an ESA letter. Each case is unique. However, if the therapist declines to issue an ESA letter to you, you will be entitled to a refund less a $35 consultation fee.

Is getting an ESA letter through you legitimate?
Yes. Our therapists are licensed, and evaluations are available in every state that recognizes ESA letters issued through teletherapy (select your state above to check availability; a few states require an in-person evaluation, and some require a 30-day relationship first). Our therapists only prescribe a letter if they deem it necessary after a real evaluation. Your letter will be good for one year and will satisfy the requirements set forth by the FHA and allow you to bring an emotional support animal into your apartment or dorm room.
You may renew your ESA letter after it expires directly with your therapist.

Why are other ESA letters less expensive?
Many other websites provide cheap letters from a template after having you fill out a short questionnaire. These are typically not accepted by landlords and may even be illegal. We seek to refer you to real, licensed therapists for teletherapy sessions. Consequently, an ESA therapist may not be available in your area and should that be the case, we will issue you a refund and refer you to other services that may be able to help.
ESA Letters by State
The Fair Housing Act protects emotional support animals in housing nationwide, but some states add their own rules about how an ESA letter must be issued. Here is what to know in the states people ask about most.
ESA Letter in California
California has the strictest ESA-letter rules in the country. Under AB 468 (Health & Safety Code § 122318, effective January 1, 2022), a health care practitioner may only provide ESA documentation if they hold a valid license, have had a client-provider relationship with you for at least 30 days, complete a clinical evaluation, and tell you that an ESA is not a service animal. Telehealth sessions count toward the 30 days.
That is why California residents are matched with our ESA Letter Plus evaluation: your therapist works with you over several video sessions across the 30-day period before issuing a letter that meets AB 468. ESA Letter in Colorado
Colorado protects emotional support animals in housing through the Fair Housing Act and the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, and it sets a high bar for the letter itself. Under C.R.S. § 12-245-229, a licensed mental health professional may only make the written finding a landlord relies on if they have met with you in person, are sufficiently familiar with you and your disability, and are qualified to make the determination. Only licensed physicians may evaluate by telemedicine.
Because our evaluations are conducted by video, we do not currently offer ESA letter evaluations to Colorado residents. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a letter your landlord could lawfully reject. ESA Letter in Utah
Utah defines a "support animal" in state law (Utah Code § 26B-6-801) as a separate category from service animals, and § 26B-6-803 bars landlords from discriminating against a tenant with a support animal or charging extra fees for it. Those protections sit alongside the federal Fair Housing Act. Utah does not impose a waiting period or in-person requirement for ESA letters, so a video evaluation with one of our licensed therapists is available to Utah residents.
Utah does penalize fraud: knowingly misrepresenting an animal as a support animal, or obtaining documentation under false pretenses, is an offense under § 26B-6-805.
