ESA Rules
- Landlords and HOAs must consider a reasonable accommodation for your ESA under the FHA
- Pet deposits and pet fees don’t apply to an approved ESA — the FHA treats it as an assistance animal, not a pet
- Breed and weight limits don’t apply to an approved ESA
- Provide clear documentation to landlords and property managers
- Voluntary registration and accessories help reduce confrontations by identifying your ESA from a distance

FHA Compliance
The FHA does not require ESAs to be registered or carry identification. However, voluntary registration provides documentation that can help avoid access disputes and demonstrate your commitment to responsible handling. Note that an ESA letter from a licensed mental health professional is required for your landlord to legally consider your pet an emotional support animal. We can connect you with a licensed therapist in your area who can evaluate you for an ESA letter.
