ESA Rules
- Landlords and HOAs must grant a reasonable accommodation for your ESA under the FHA unless a narrow exception applies
- When a housing provider grants the accommodation, your ESA isn’t a pet under the FHA — so pet rent, pet deposits and pet fees don’t apply
- Breed and weight limits can’t be used to deny an ESA accommodation — the decision has to be about your specific animal
- Unlike service dogs, airlines no longer make exceptions for emotional support animals and may treat them as pets
- An ESA letter, either from a local physician or through our licensed network, supports your request for a reasonable accommodation under the FHA
- Registration & accessories are convenience items that do not confer additional legal rights on their own

FHA Compliance
The FHA does not require ESAs to be registered or carry identification. However, voluntary registration provides documentation that can help avoid access disputes and demonstrate your commitment to responsible handling. Note that an ESA letter from a licensed mental health professional is required for your landlord to legally consider your pet an emotional support animal. We can connect you with a licensed therapist in your area who can evaluate you for an ESA letter.
